Medieval Art in Global Perspective: the Crusades
3.0
creditsAverage Course Rating
This course explores the crusades as a catalyst for artistic encounter between “east” and “west” in the Holy Land from the late eleventh through late thirteenth centuries. Beginning with Pope Urban II’s call to crusade in 1095, we will focus on precise moments and monuments of artistic encounter in the Holy Land in which the distinctions between “east” and “west” are rendered permeable and unstable. Jerusalem as a holy city for medieval Jews, Muslims, and Christians will feature prominently as an epicenter of cultural contact. The course, therefore, offers a global perspective on medieval art through the close study of convergences in visual culture spurred by encounters between different ethnic, religious, and linguistic communities.
