This seminar examines art history's interpretative paradigms for understanding the "devotional image" (Andachtsbild) -- its characteristic material and pictorial forms, its cultic and ritual functions, the modes of agency attributed to it, its psychological dynamics, and the types of ethical and spiritual self-formations it facilitated. Authors include M le, Panofsky, Freedberg, Belting, Bredekamp, Camille, Hamburger, Bynum, Lentes, Falkenburg, Rudy, Van Eck, Melion, Pericolo, Merback, and others. Student research projects may focus on a topic in Byzantium, Christian Europe of the Middle Ages, Renaissance or Reformation era, or they may venture into other geographies and historical periods.
