Modern researchers in biology use model organisms to help characterize diseases and discover treatments. This freshman seminar course will cover the fundamentals of one specific model system used in biological research each week and will focus on learning how model organisms are used to discover the mechanisms of disease and identification of treatment targets. In addition, students will learn how to critically read scientific literature, from high-level articles in the lay press to primary scientific research articles, and learn the impact of model organism research on society. Students will be encouraged to openly discuss current controversial topics in biological research.
