This course is designed to introduce students with a general overview of the drug discovery and development process. It covers the history of drug discovery, and how natural products are an incredibly important source for new drug development. Additionally, an overview of the modern drug discovery process, including target identification, application of medicinal chemistry in lead optimization, drug screening methods, preclinical studies, and clinical trials to evaluate the efficacy and safety of drugs will be discussed. An overview of intellectual property management and the FDA’s role in the drug approval process will be covered. The COVID-19 vaccine development process will also be presented and discussed.
