This seminar investigates the Eastern Mediterranean as a space of intense cultural interaction in the Late Bronze Age, exploring how people, ideas, and things not only came into contact but deeply influenced one another through maritime trade, art, politics, etc. In addition to class discussion, we will work hands-on with artifacts from the JHU Archaeological Museum, focusing on material from Cyprus.

The best aspect of this course was the knowledgeable professor who planned hands-on lectures and kept students engaged. Students enjoyed exploring different cultures and visiting the Johns Hopkins Archeological Museum (JHAM). The worst aspects of this course included the excessive readings which often didn’t seem to tie into class discussions. The course could be improved if the readings were lessened and if the assigned readings were discussed more often in class. Prospective students should know that this is a stimulating and interesting course, but there is a lot of reading and extra research required.

Students highly rated this course for having interesting material, al owing students to work with artifacts and for its small class size. Additionally, the professor was praised for her engaging and passionate teaching style. The lengthy class session and long readings were noted as negative aspects of the class. Breaking the class into two shorter sessions was a common suggestion for improvement. Prospective students should know there is a lot of reading for the course, but the course didn’t presume students had prior knowledge. This was an enjoyable and interesting course and highly recommended.
