Fall 2012

Professor: David Hershinow

(4.0)

The best aspects of this course were the interesting topic and the professor’s skill at guiding discussions. The negative aspects were the heavy reading and writing. Also, some students thought the discussions were too focused on the theme of the course and did not cover the works’ actual literary merit. Suggestions for improvement included discussing a broader range of topics outside the theme of the spectral and getting the discussion questions before class so students could better prepare. Students should expect to do a lot of reading and writing, but the course is enjoyable and the grading is fair.

Fall 2013

Professor: Elizabeth Steedley

The best aspects of this course included the effective and different presentations of how tutoring ideas and practices. Students found the course to be very helpful in preparation to become tutors, especial y watching recorded sessions from the Writing Center. Suggestions for improvement included going to the Writing Center a little earlier in the semester, and watching more videos for further examples. Prospective students should be willing to commit to learning the skills necessary to be helpful writing tutors at the Writing Center.

Students praised this course for giving students valuable skills on how to edit another person’s work. Perceived issues with the course were few, although some students found it hard to pay attention in the course. Suggestions for improvement were few as students largely didn’t have issues with the course, although one student wished lectures were shorter while another wished students had more opportunities to watch other people leading a tutoring session. Prospective students should know that students found the course adequately prepared them to be a tutor for the writing center.
