How do material forms come to be ruins? Why are some exalted, while others left to languish? What happens to historical ruins in the aftermath of wars and natural disasters? How do ruins impress themselves on the bodies and imaginations of those who live in their vicinity? Such questions guide our close reading and discussion of 3-4 ethnographies in this course to help us explore the proliferation of ruins around us. Students will also be asked to do independent projects examining sites of their choice which have a liveliness to them.
