Climate change, population growth, war - what questions do archaeologists ask about the ancient past, how do they collect relevant evidence, and how do they arrive at satisfying answers to their questions? This course will review major theoretical currents in archaeology including evolutionary, cultural-historical, processual and post-processual approaches and discuss the future of archaeology as a scientific and humanistic discipline. Basic techniques for analyzing major categories of artifacts such as lithics, ceramics, archaeobotanical, and zooarchaeological materials will also be introduced.

The best aspects of this course included the intriguing presentation of material, the balanced workload, and the instructor’s engaging lecturing style. Students also appreciated the instructor’s enthusiasm for the course content. Some students felt that the course was too demanding for an intro level class and that there were not enough opportunities to improve grades (grades were based on the mean of three tests throughout the semester). Suggestions included providing more online study resources and assigning more out-of-class work so that students can better understand the material. Prospective students are encouraged to attend every lecture and study regularly for the tests as opposed to waiting until the day before.

The best aspect of this course was that it provided a broad overview and covered a range of topics associated with course material. The readings were informative and helpful. Some students found lectures to be disorganized and assignment instructions unclear. This course could be improved by having a seminar style discussion for key readings and focusing more on methods and less on theory. Prospective students interested in pursuing an archeology major are encouraged to take this course early on in their undergraduate career.
