This course explores the evolution of scientific entrepreneurship, especially focusing in areas of medical science, medical devices, and biotechnology. We'll study factors that have historically both helped and hindered start-ups. We'll visit business incubators, meeting Hopkins-connected entrepreneurs. Lectures and readings will cover topics ranging from the origins of the ethical-drugs industry, to the development of biotechnology, the "race to map the human genome, and controversies over the patenting of genes.
