A course that seeks to explore the temporal changes and traditions that involve healing and faith in Western culture, in particular in the Roman Catholic tradition, as well as different concepts of disease and what it means to be healthy and sick within a community. Classes will discuss key figures within the Judeo-Christian culture at different time periods (ancient, medieval, and modern) who responded to the sick and marginalized through their works of charity and physical healing, with the aim of restoring the community and creating a culture of health. There will also be a hands-on learning experience of some religious communities in the Baltimore area who are dedicated to serving the elderly poor and sick.
