A paradigmatically philosophical project is that of reconciling the “manifest” and “scientific images”. We can see this project at work in some early modern attempts to reconcile the place of “man” in “nature” in the wake of the scientific revolution by firmly demarcating the “physical” and the “mental”, leaving only the former to science. But cognitive science is now a robust network of research programs. In this domain of inquiry, the two images meet: the scientist, as thinker, is her own object of inquiry. In this course, we will undertake the task of reconciliation.
