Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) and Benedict de Spinoza (1632-1677) are two of the greatest political philosophers of modern times. Both philosophers were realists, both wrote extensively on religion and politics, and both were accused with atheism. In this class we will study closely their highly influential masterpieces: Hobbes's Leviathan and Spinoza's Theological-Political Treatise.
