Topics in International Macroeconomics and Finance

The course will review selected topics in international macroeconomics and finance. The topics include: financial globalization; international portfolio diversification; capital account liberalization and the choice of the exchange rate regime in emerging markets. The analysis will be motivated by current policy issues but will also be based on mathematical models of the international economy.

The best aspects of this course included the interesting subject material which was relevant to current events. Students found the debates to be an engaging way of learning the course material and also enjoyed the very knowledgeable professor. The worst aspects of this course included the difficult problem sets and dul lectures. The course would be improved if the class sessions were more interactive and if the students had more assistance with the problems sets and exams. Prospective students should know that this is an interesting economic course with very interesting subject material. Regular attendance and attentive reading will ensure students are successful in the course.

Students praised this course for covering an interesting and timely topic that was “very relevant to everyday life.” Some students disliked the lectures, which they felt were were dry, dul , and given in a monotonous voice. Suggestions for improvement included adding more interactivity in the form of group discussion. Students also wished the course’s problem sets be reworked to help them prepare them for the exams. Prospective students should know that students found that the course was interesting but not an easy class. Students found having a background in other economic or finance classes as well as knowledge of the history of the economic crisis was helpful.
