This course explores the role of ideas, practices, and relations in world politics. We will place world politics in a long-term historical perspective to reveal patterns of change and continuity. In doing so, we will demonstrate that world politics was not always the way that it is today. This will open up critical space for us to think about what forms of political change are possible in today’s world system and to distill lessons for activists and policy-makers trying to shape the future. The readings will lead us across the history of conflict, cooperation, colonialism, decolonization, resistance movements, religion, humanitarianism, and environmentalism. By closely reading key texts and discussing them together we will achieve a deep understanding of ideas and change in world history.
