In this course, we will examine gendered forms of power in the context of conflict and war. We will take an inclusive approach, and engage with voices and perspectives often marginalized in political discourses, particularly those of women and LGBTQIA people. We will also seek to explore critical approaches, including queer theory, feminist, postcolonial, poststructural approaches; and specific case studies, including Guatemala, Liberia, Greece, the US, and Ireland. Students are encouraged to engage with the course materials, and examine individual perspectives, lenses, biases. What voice can you lend to the stories we tell? How can we improve our representation of the world, and better understand the ways in which gendered forms of power enable and constrain our understanding of, and our role in, the world?
