The best aspects of this course included the experience students obtained in performing research and writing; the instructor, who was both supportive of and helpful to the students; and the opportunity for students to write on a relevant subject of his/her choice. One student felt that he/she was “in the dark” about certain things, particularly the guidelines regarding Hopkins honor theses. Another student felt that the class was a huge time commitment. Suggestions included providing an easy-to-access document that has accurate and up-to-date information about writing a thesis for political science; also, incorporating presentation opportunities and meetings with fellow students. Prospective students should know that this is their research project and it’s expected to be completed independently; that it’s crucial to have a research idea/topic in mind and to be prepared to commit a large amount of time to studying it.

The best aspect of this course was the chance to produce high quality independent research on a topic you are passionate about with the guidance of an advisor. However, many students cited a lack of guidance from the department as the worst aspect. Suggestions for improvement include creating a seminar to give a sense of community to the students, and giving a bit more guidance regarding due dates. Prospective students should know that this course requires self-discipline, motivation, and is very rewarding.

Students appreciated the professor’s feedback and had the opportunity to explore a personal research project. Students felt it was difficult to self-start a full research project and were unsure about deadlines and meeting times throughout the semester. Suggestions for improvement included having a more structured course with clearer guidance from the department. Prospective students should be self-motivated and disciplined in order to complete research in a timely manner. Though there was little guidance, students should actively seek out advisors to answer any questions.
