White Supremacy

creditsAverage Course Rating
This is an exploratory graduate seminar examining white supremacy in politics and theory. We shall be especially concerned with continuities and changes in racial formations of whiteness over time. This, in turn, will enable us to take up questions of how to best theorize and contest contemporary iterations of white supremacy made manifest in the discourse of race war, replacement theory, and hybrid biopolitical and necropolitical projects. We will investigate white disavowal of existential crises of climate change and pandemic threats within apocalyptic modes of whiteness where the end of white supremacy is imagined in world-ending terms. Readings may include: Fanon, Du Bois, Harris, Hartman, Césaire, Mbembe, Wynter, Moten, Moreton-Robinson, Painter, Olson, Baldwin, Foucault.
