In recent decades, scholars across the social sciences and humanities have negotiated an “archival turn” in their disciplines. Yet the “archival turn” has taken different forms. Some scholars have approached archival research as a source of empirical evidence and as a qualitative method. For others, the “archive” itself has become a focus of inquiry as a site of epistemological, political, and social power relations. This seminar explores canonical works and new scholarship on archival approaches and archival turns in a wide range of disciplines, including political science and political theory, anthropology, sociology, and literary studies. We will investigate the intersections and disjunctures in these disparate literatures, equipping students to engage in dialogue across subfields and academic specialisms.
