This course offers an introduction to American Political Thought, an ongoing and contentious conversation about the meaning of and relationship between liberalism, democracy, race, gender, pluralism, violence, and the rule of law in the United States. We'll explore these issues by reading, discussing, and writing about texts by Thomas Paine, Alexander Hamilton, Frederick Douglass, Walt Whitman, W.E.B. Du Bois, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, John Dewey, Malcolm X, Audre Lorde, Ta-Nehisi Coates, and others.
