The city is central to American life yet is underexplored in political science. This class explores urban politics through the lens of American Political Development (APD), which explores the historical progression of institutions both formal (legislature, executive, judiciary) and informal (parties, interest groups). Students will learn key research topics in APD, be able to explain American institutional development from founding to present, and understand American urban politics, including issues of race, class and gender.
