What is capitalism? What is democracy? Are they compatible, or do capitalist priorities of growth and profit undermine democratic citizenship and inclusion? How do assumptions about freedom and equality shape the answers to these questions? This course surveys a range of thinkers who have engaged with these concepts and problems. We also will pay close attention to how the problem of capitalism and democracy intersects with questions of race, gender, and class. Readings may include work by W.E.B. Du Bois, Fernand Braudel, Carole Pateman, Robert Dahl, Manning Marable, William Connolly, Wendy Brown, Kathi Weeks, Lester Spence, and Thomas Piketty, among others.
