creditsAverage Course Rating
This course explores the origins and nature of the diverse challenges facing contemporary Mexico including violence, drug trafficking, corruption, weak democratic institutions, uneven economic performance, and a complicated relationship with the United States by examining the evolution of its political and economic institutions from the Mexican Revolution to the present. A core question underlying the course is why these problems persist despite the remarkable political and economic reforms undertaken since the 1990s and whether the new government to be elected in 2018 will be able to resolve them.
