Average Course Rating

(-1)

This course examines how theatre mirrors and critiques governance, power structures, and civic responsibility. Through engagement with key texts that center on political power, authority, and democratic dynamics, students will critically analyze both canonical and contemporary works to understand how theatre reflects and challenges societal structures. The first segment will focus on a deep dive into one foundational play, allowing all students to develop a shared framework for analysis. In the latter portion, students will break into pairs to complete a comparative assignment analyzing two separate plays. Each group will share key points of comparison, fostering discussion and debate on how different works engage with themes of democracy, governance, and public ethics. There are no formal pre-requisites for the course, but students who have completed their re-introduction to writing requirement or have taken a discussion-based course/seminar prior to this are more likely to engage well with the format.
