Psychology and cognitive science have long sought objective means of measuring cognition to make inferences about how we think, perceive, and reason. In this course, we will tour some of the key approaches used to study mental phenomena in psychological science: psychophysics (how do changing stimuli alter our perceptions?), development (what does a baby know? what do they learn?), brain imaging (what physical substrates underlie cognitive processes?), and comparative cognition (what can the behavior of non-human animals tell us about our mind?). This course is primarily intended for upper-level students who are interested in the study of the mind and the brain (e.g., from psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science, and philosophy, among others). Restricted to Senior & Junior Psychology majors & minors. Prerequisite: AS.200.101 Introductory to Psychology OR AS.200.110 Cognitive Psychology, or by instructor permission.
