Fall 2012

Professor: Maria Ruhlmann

(3.45)

Students liked being immersed in Spanish and using various multimedia to learn the language. The negative aspects of the course were that the teaching was not very effective and required students to learn a lot of the material on their own. Students suggested that the course would be improved by more in-depth teaching of grammar principles. Students should know that the course is taught entirely in Spanish, so it requires a basic level of understanding and speaking the language. If you read every day and do the assignments you will learn a lot from this course.

Fall 2012

Professor: Michel e Tracy

(4.14)

Students liked the small, participatory format of the class and the variety of activities. They said the professor was passionate and engaging. The negative aspect of the course was the MySpanishLab activities, which were tedious and frustrating. Suggestions for improvement included changing or getting rid of the MySpanishLab activities and having more conversation and listening practice in class. Students are encouraged to spend time studying outside of class if they want to do wel .

Fall 2012

Professor: Amy Sheeran

(4.45)

Students liked the in-class discussions and the amount of Spanish conversation. They also said that the professor gave helpful corrections and was always willing to answer students’ questions. The negative aspects of the course were the grading of the MySpanishLab exercises and that it could be hard to understand the professor. A suggestion for improvement was more opportunities to practice speaking either in class or outside of class. Students should know that the class moves quickly, but it is fairly easy to do well if you keep up with the work.

Fall 2013

Professor: Cathleen Carris

(4.08)

The best aspects of this course included the good balance of reading, writing, listening, and speaking activities. Students felt that the course was very effective in teaching them the foundations of Spanish, and enjoyed the many opportunities to practice the language. Students found the oral presentations to be very difficult as they did not have as high a fluency level as the professor assumed they did. Students also felt the grading system was a bit harsh. Suggestions for improvement included increasing the number of conversational opportunities within the class to help students prepare for the oral exam. Students also recommended shorter oral activities than the presentations. Prospective students should be prepared for an immersive language experience, and that they will gain a strong understanding of the language if they are willing to work hard and stay on top of their work.

Fall 2013

Professor: Michel e Tracy

(4.35)

Small class sizes, group discussions and a helpful professor were some of the best aspects of this course. Students felt like the course helped them improve their Spanish language skil s through discussions and the emphasis of speaking and listening. Students did not like some of the work that was assigned in this class, however, particularly the oral exams with a partner, the online assignments, and the writing assignments. Students suggested that additional opportunities for conversational speaking activities, and felt that more variety in the assignments would have helped. Prospective students should be prepared to keep up with the materials and ask the professor for help as needed.

Fall 2014

Professor: Mary Speer

(3.57)

The best aspects from this course were the in-class discussions, group projects, and the variety of learning methods. Additionally, the small class size made it easier to practice speaking conversationally. The assignments on MySpanishLab and the inexperienced instructor were the worst aspects of the class. Suggested improvements to the class included giving more clarity with regards to the expectations of the instructor and fewer online assignments. Prospective students should know students found that having more experience with Spanish beyond Elements One was helpful, but not necessary. The workload was steady but typical for a language course.

Fall 2014

Professor: Francisco Gomez Martos

(3.92)

The high points of this class included the relaxed atmosphere, ample opportunity to practice speaking and the lack of busy work. Al the assignments were clearly useful. Students were split regarding the worst aspects, with some citing the rapid pace and others finding things too easy. Suggestions to improve the class included learning more colloquial vocabulary and fewer of the online assignments. Prospective students should know that this can be a very chal enging course for students who have only had Elements One, but with self-direction and consistent effort they will do well.

Fall 2014

Professor: Ian Rogers

(4.33)

This class was highlighted by a great instructor, frequent chances to listen and practice speaking, and a reasonable pace. Many students thought their questions about assignments or concepts were answered very completely by the instructor. The large class size made it difficult to speak up and many students were disappointed by the movie which was hard to understand. Suggested improvements included giving more time to practice speaking in class and more specific expectations for the presentations. Prospective students should know that there is a big jump between Elements One and Two and those without previous Spanish might find this class difficult at first. There is regular work and as long as that is completed you should do wel .

Fall 2014

Professor: GERMAN AND ROMANCE LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE

(3.85)

The best aspects of this class were the engaging and patient instructor, the small class size, and the inclusion of cultural lessons along with language. The worst aspects included the number of assignments and the unclear explanation of expectations and due dates. Fewer online assignments and more uniformity of prior experience were suggested improvements to the course. Prospective students should know that their experience in the class will vary a great deal based on who is teaching. This instructor was recommended for students who do not feel very proficient in the language yet.

Spring 2013

Professor: Lauren Judy

(3.92)

The best aspects of this course included the instructor’s availability to answer questions and provide help, the oral activities were advantageous in learning and understanding the language better, and the chances to practice speaking firsthand proved invaluable during test times. One student felt that the absence of partial credit made tests excessively difficult. Another student felt that the MySpanishLab was such an unreliable program that using it felt counterintuitive to learning the material. Suggestions included explaining directions to students in English and incorporating more speaking time during class. Prospective students should know that frequent tests are administered in this course.

Spring 2013

Professor: GERMAN AND ROMANCE LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES

(4.19)

The best aspects of this course included the integration of frequent exercises, the small class size, and that the textbook was relevant and corresponded appropriately to the lectures. Students appreciated the instructors’ willingness to help, and overall interaction. Some students felt the grading on written assignments was needlessly tough, and the instructor was at times, difficult to keep up with. Suggestions included utilizing a different online component and incorporating more reviews prior to exam dates. Prospective students are encouraged to pace themselves when studying for exams in this course; it’s not possible to cram the night before and get a good grade.

Spring 2013

Professor: Francisco Gomez Martos

(3.89)

142 The best aspects of this course included the conversational classroom format, the wide breadth of knowledge obtained throughout the semester, and the instructor’s approachability. Students also appreciated that the instructor taught enthusiastically. One student felt that assigning smaller, more frequent homework assignments would be more beneficial than dispensing large compilations. Another student felt that there was no way for students who show improvement to boost their grade; that the grading system was unforgiving toward students who didn’t have a strong comprehension of the language prior to taking the course. Suggestions included incorporating more assignments that are less textbook-reliant and eliminating the MySpanishLab requirements. Prospective students should know the class is considerably challenging but invaluably educational.

Spring 2013

Professor: Christian Pack

(4.5)

The best aspects of this course included the real-world examples and situations provided by the instructor, the class discussions, and the instructor’s interactive lecturing style. One student didn’t appreciate that an expensive required text was never used. Another student felt that class time wasn’t always used effectively. Suggestions included spending more time on grammatical concepts and getting rid of MySpanishLab. Prospective students are encouraged not to wait to complete the lab activities.

Spring 2014

Professor: Michel e Tracy

(4.15)

The instructor is engaging and invested in her student’s success, and Spanish is spoken often in class. The cultural aspect to the course is also highly rated. Many students rated the fast pace of the material covered as the worst aspect of the course. More group work during class and a slower pace were both suggested improvements to the course. Prospective students should know that there is regular homework and you wil need to study often to become competent.

Spring 2014

Professor: Christian Pack

(4.22)

The instructor’s availability and teaching style were the best aspects of this course. She was encouraging and wanted to see her students succeed. The software program VoiceThread was the worst aspect of the course, and many students suggested getting rid of it or having a better introduction to the program prior to using it as ways to improve the course. A field trip and the requirement to speak only Spanish in the classroom were some additional suggestions. Prospective students should know that there is a good deal of work involved in the course, and taking it with Prof. Peck is highly recommended.

The best aspects of this course were the small class size, the interactive nature of the course, and the professor who was very engaging and effective. Prospective students should be prepared for a significant amount of work and should have a solid understanding of Spanish Elements I concepts.

Spring 2015

Professor: Francisco Gomez Martos

(4.09)

The best aspect of the course was the friendly class atmosphere which encouraged students to speak the language. The professor had the class speak almost entirely in Spanish, which helped to improve speaking and listening skills. Some students felt that the course moved much too quickly and levels of student fluency were not evenly matched. Students recommended that the work be made less difficult and that the instructor provide more feedback. Prospective students should know that there is a lot of work and that this is not an introductory Spanish course.

Spring 2015

Professor: Cathleen Carris
