The best aspect of this course was the professor, whose fun and interactive teaching style made the course enjoyable. The students felt they learned a lot in a short period of time. The worst aspects of the course included the textbooks and workbooks, which students found less effective than the professor’s actual handouts. The course would improve if the students had more speaking practice through exams and assignments. Prospective students should know that this is a fun and straightforward course that wil introduce them to the Portuguese language.

The best aspects of this course included the enthusiastic and helpful professor. Students found the course very immersive and effective in teaching them the language. However, although students liked the emphasis on conversation and speaking the language, they wished they had learned more about the grammar and forming sentences on their own. Suggestions for improvement included adding additional, more diverse activities to test students’ understanding of the language in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, such as additional group projects or conversations. Prospective students are advised to have some previous knowledge of a Romance language because very little English is spoken in class. So long as students are wil ing to study and put the effort in, they will find that this is a good introductory course to the language.

Fall 2014

This class was very enjoyable, the instructor was patient and helpful and students found the class structure enhanced their learning. In addition to language instruction, the instructor introduced Brazilian culture. Though many students could not find fault with the class, some though the homework was repetitive and felt like busy work. More vocabulary and additional guest speakers would improve the class. Prospective students should know it was helpful to have a background in Spanish or other Romance languages. This class and instructor were highly recommended.
