During the seventeenth century, the increasingly playgoing public of London, Madrid, and Paris transformed theater into an outstanding channel for cultural expression. This course combines the study of theater history, including the spaces, audiences, playwrights, and actors, with the literary analysis of plays by Christopher Marlowe, Ben Jonson, Lope de Vega, and Marie-Catherine Desjardins. The main objective of this course is to examine and discuss early modern drama in light of contemporary life at court.
