The 1st half of the semester will consider some of the theoretical underpinnings (Montesquieu, Rousseau, Condorcet) and a few examples of Revolutionary rhetoric, especially the trial of Louis XVI and the late speeches of Robespierre. The 2nd half of the semester will study memoirs and literary works produced during the Revolution's aftermath and 19th-century attempts to culturally digest the Revolution.
