We will examine five American writiers who were emerging or thriving in the middle of the 20th century: John Cheever, Bernard Malamud, Vladimir Nabokov, Jean Stafford, John Updike. We will read short stories by all five, as well as the following novels: Malamud's The Assistant, Nabokov's Lolita and Pale Fire. Restricted to graduate students in the MFA program.
