This course is an introduction to sociological perspectives on globalization—its origins, contours and consequences. We will review classical and contemporary theories of globalization and global social change. Topics covered in the course include the relationship between capitalism and globalization (contemporary and historical), global inequality and the emergence of the North-South divide, institutions of global governance, the ecological impact and limits of globalization, and the intersection of class, race, gender and citizenship divides on a global scale. We will also explore various responses to globalization “from below” in the form of anti-globalization and alter-globalization social movements, and assess the likely future trajectory of global social change.
