Average Course Rating

(4.34)

A studio course introducing students to sculptural concepts and methods. Emphasis is on the process of creating. Even the simplest materials can effectively activate space, convey meaning, and elicit emotion when used thoughtfully and imaginatively. Students will learn different methods including additive and reductive techniques, construction, modeling, and mold-making. No prerequisites except a willingness to experiment, make mistakes... and clean up when you are done. Approval in this course will be considered after enrollment in SIS. Attendance in 1st class is mandatory.

Students broadly praised this course for giving them the freedom to explore art using different material, with assignments ranging from having rigid requirements to others which had looser standards. Issues 20with the course varied; while some couldn’t find any fault with the course, others found the course to be expensive as it required them to buy materials to complete their projects. Suggestions for improvement included a general desire for more direction and structure in the program with one student asking for additional demonstrations. Prospective students should know that the course does require a good amount of independent work but is a great introduction to sculpture.

The best aspect of the course included the diverse types of assignments and projects. Students enjoyed being able to experiment with different types of materials and were able to get creative in an independent setting. The worst aspects of the course included the professor who spent lots of time giving instruction in class due to personal distractions. The course would improve if the professor would stick to talking about the course only and not go off on tangents. Prospective students should know that the course involves lots of work, but is very fun and will definitely bring out their creative sides.

The best aspects of this course were the hand-on experiences with sculpting and the professor’s openness to questions. There is a great amount of freedom offered to students and they wil be given the chance to shine through different mediums. The professor encourages her students to go where their vision takes them, but sometimes there is a little too much freedom available. Many students also felt that some of the materials were difficult to work with and heavy. Students would prefer a variety of projects, stricter deadlines, and more classroom space to improve the quality of this course. Prospective students should be comfortable taking this class even if they do not have experience in sculpture and working with tough materials.
