The best aspect of this course was the passionate professor who showed concern for the development of her students. The course was interactive and there was effective use of different teaching techniques. However, many students felt the course progressed very slowly. Students felt like they were not learning as much new Chinese as they could have. The course could have been greatly improved if perhaps there was a textbook and more structure in the way things were taught to the students. Prospective students should know that there wil be a mixed level of skill in the classroom. 48

Students praised the course for having a small class size which made learning “personal and fun” and made it easy to get personal attention. Some students thought the pace of learning in the class was a bit slow. Other students felt the class unfairly mixed, since some students had some expertise in the language, while others had no history with the language, which hampered learning for both groups. Suggestions for improvement included speeding up the pace of learning in the class room and perhaps providing more opportunities to practice the language during class. Prospective students should know that students found that some expertise in Hebrew was helpful for the class. 50

The instructor was given a great deal of praise for her enthusiastic and knowledgeable teaching style. Students appreciated the relationship they had developed with the instructor over the semester, and found it beneficial to learning. However, the large class size, repetitive lectures, and variety in student ability were negatives in this class. Suggestions to improve the course included capping the class size at 12 or 15, and ensuring that al students enter at the same proficiency level. Prospective students should know that the course requires a significant time commitment in order to succeed, but effort was rewarded with language proficiency.
