The two-credit sequence is designed to strengthen reading fluency and comprehension for students with intermediate oral and reading proficiency. The main goal of the course is to learn strategies for reading and comprehending materials written in Japanese. Specific strategies and techniques are introduced, followed by practice. Class materials include diverse genres including drama scripts, essays, and short fiction, in which students will be exposed to a variety of writing styles using both contemporary and classical forms of expression. Graduate students in related fields, such as East Asian Studies, will also benefit by strengthening their ability to read and interpret authentic materials relevant to their research. Participation in the course would require reading authentic Japanese texts and classroom activities conducted in Japanese and weekly writing assignments. There will be no conversation practice. Students who have completed AS.378.116 with Kanji background can enroll with instructor's permission.
