This course focuses the state of energy and water in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The MENA region has been pegged as a hotspot zone globally for conflict due to water scarcity and energy insecurity. With a hot arid climate, this region is home to some of the most increased temperatures globally making some regions potentially uninhabitable. With the impacts of climate change this will exacerbate these insecurities even further, whereby the MENA region is faced with severe uncertainties. The region consists of some of the most vulnerable communities, as well as political and economic instability. In the face of these challenges, a just energy transition towards a green economy, as well as a water secure future requires significant policy and legislative shifts. This course will examine the existing situation in MENA, as well as possibilities and potentials opportunities for transformation through the water-energy nexus.
