This course will examine the life work of select American icons from the 1940s through the present. We will determine what their contribution was to the social, political, and cultural movements of their time and examine whether and how their vision for America differs, if at all, from that which existed during the Obama years and under the present administration. Our in depth exploration of the life work of individuals like James Baldwin, August Wilson, Angela Davis, Nancy Cunard, Anna Julia Cooper, Fannie Lou Hamer, Louis Armstrong, Audre Lorde, and Kimberle Crenshaw, to name a few, will enrich our cultural literacy and by so doing, deepen our understanding of the core values and principles that inform the concept of American democracy in its purest form.

The course will also empower students to think critically about the contributions of these cultural champions with an eye to identifying the lessons that may help us to conceive and plan for a multiracial society with increasing prospects for racial harmony. The hard truths lived by our Giants will make it apparent that the road to post racial America, so often alluded to in the popular press, may be nothing more than a pipe dream...leading us to conclude that race matters more now than ever before in our country's history.
