This elective course will focus on engaging and educating the public regarding climate change, the most serious environmental issue of our time. Students will read, listen to, and view journalism and other forms of communication that address the topic, to learn how top science writers inform and inspire the public. They will consider challenges to effective communication; ways of finding reliable sources, confirming data, and countering misinformation; and strategies for reporting accurate and solutions-based stories. They will participate often and actively on discussion boards to share their learning and ideas and will complete several writing exercises and assignments including a story pitch. Guest speakers will present real-world experiences and expertise.
