creditsAverage Course Rating
This course offers students the opportunity to learn real-world investment management techniques with hands-on experience in managing real assets professionally. It approaches investment management from a practitioner’s perspective, covering both necessary quantitative tools and qualitative decision-making processes. It reviews the theoretical foundation of investments, as needed, but puts emphasis on practical applications in managing investment portfolios, including: defining investment objectives with constraints, identifying investment opportunities, debating their merits, making investment decisions, and executing trades. In addition, ethical decision-making practices will be emphasized throughout the course. Student activities center on the Student Managed Investment Fund, which has been funded through generous donations. Students work collaboratively in small teams to carry out investment research, make trade recommendations, and execute trades approved by their student-run investment committee. Research covers asset classes, industry sectors, and investment styles. One team will be dedicated to overall portfolio risk management. Students may switch teams in subsequent quarters. This advanced experiential program of study helps students acquire “job-ready” skills for the investment management industry. There will be two interim and a final investment presentations made to the Fund by, and required of all students. A portion of the Fund is actively rebalanced as investments are added or removed based on approved students’ recommendations.
