Real estate investors, developers, and operators are increasingly looking for a path to balance sustainability and profitability. Through case studies, lectures, and a simulation game, students will acquire a framework for profitably building or renovating a piece of real estate that generates all of the power that it uses on-site by way of renewable sources (solar, wind, geothermal, etc.). The class will examine the application of net zero to various property types such as residential, office, and hotels. Students will learn how net zero deals are financed using tax credits and policies such as net metering. The final project for this class is a sustainability management simulation game where students will be tasked with reducing a hotel’s greenhouse gas emission (GHG) by 50% over a period of 7 years while at the same time managing the hotel’s financial performance.
