This course examines the diagnostic and assessment process that students in need of academic and behavior supports gradually undergo towards the potential eligibility for special education services. Throughout the course, participants will explore the continuum of assessment instruments from Tier 1 to Tier 3 and their multiple purposes (progress monitoring, diagnostic, eligibility etc.). The foci include: 1) Understanding the difference between the different types of assessments and their purpose in multi-tier systems of supports across general and special education classrooms, 2) Review of measurement statistics and practice with the administration, scoring, and interpretation of commonly used norm-referenced instruments, and 3) Becoming familiar with the assessment procedures used for determination of eligibility for special education. The course includes writing a formal educational report based on multiple data points of formal and informal assessments and making recommendations for instructional supports and strategies.
