Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming education, influencing how we learn, teach, and—perhaps—think about understanding knowledge itself. This course critically examines AI as both a tool and a mirror, reflecting human cognition, creativity, ethics, and systemic biases. Through hands-on experimentation, critical analysis, and applied projects, students will explore AI’s potential to enrich and expand educational goals and practices while questioning its limitations and potential dangers. Designed for a broad range of educational professionals, the course balances theoretical inquiry with practical skill development. Students will engage with AI tools, analyze their impact, and apply them in meaningful ways to their professional contexts. The course is structured around five interconnected themes: (1) AI, Cognition, and Learning: Understanding how AI might influence human thinking and knowledge construction, as well as the potential dangers of shallow learning due to cognitive offloading; (2) AI as Co-Intelligence and Thought Partner: Examining AI’s role in creativity, problem-solving, and human-AI collaboration; (3) Ethics, Bias, and AI Governance: Addressing predictive AI risks, bias, privacy concerns, and ethical development; (4) AI and the Purposes of Education: Investigating what education should—and should not—be in an AI-mediated world; (5) Policy, Design, and Future Directions: Designing responsible AI frameworks for educational settings.
