Fys: Queering Engineering – towards Inclusion in Stem
2.0
creditsAverage Course Rating
The STEM disciplines, and particularly the physical sciences and engineering, have been inhospitable to the open expression of queer, and particularly femme and trans identities. At the same time, numerous examples exist of contributors to these disciplines who held LGBTQ identities or otherwise engaged in diverse expressions of sexuality and/or gender. We will uncover some of the hidden histories of queer engineers and scientists and their forebears. We will analyze the ways that these disciplines have constructed and policed the closet within their professional boundaries. We will read and discuss recent studies regarding the limits to inclusion in these disciplines presently and devise strategies for “queering” these professional spaces so that they may become increasingly open to contributions from people of all sexual and gender identities.
