This interdisciplinary seminar is designed to reinhabit the concept of “place.” What does it mean to meet the world in local, public spaces, and how can such sites be engineered to promote accessibility, environmental sustainability, and social good? Our semester-long investigation of grey, green, and social infrastructures will pair discussion of key texts drawn from urban studies, civil engineering, sociology, ecology, and literature, with students’ own fieldwork—multimodal explorations of how public space is debated, designed, and restored in our local Baltimore context. Open to all majors; no expertise required.
