This course provides an introduction into the statistics methods commonly used in bioinformatics and biological research. The course briefly reviews basic probability and statistics including events, conditional probabilities, Bayes' theorem, random variables, probability distributions and hypothesis testing and then proceeds to topics more specific to bioinformatics research, including Bayesian statistics, Markov chains and hidden Markov models. Students will learn the principles behind these statistical methods and how they can be applied to analyze biological sequences and data.
