No matter how brilliant an idea, it will never be realized without the support of resource holders – whether those resources are technical skills, time, attention, commitment, or money. How does the innovator enlist the active involvement of direct reports, organizational leaders, peers, and partners to implement their initiatives? In this course, students will learn to align their ideas with strategic goals, use communication tools to influence others to support their plans, manage themselves for productivity, and create the team and organizational culture most likely to result in the implementation of their ideas.

Students found the topics and guest speakers to be some of the best aspects of this course. They enjoyed working in groups and felt that many of the topics discussed were applicable to real-world situations. They did not like the daily quizzes, which they felt were simply busy work, and felt that the case studies were outdated and too long. Students also found that much of the reading they did was redundant, so they suggested assigning more concise excerpts from the text. They also wanted a new textbook and more discussions with less busywork like quizzes. Prospective students should be prepared for a lot of reading and a daily quiz. Students felt that the class was interesting and good for students interested in sports.

The best aspects of this course included the lectures, in-class activities, feedback from the instructor on memos, and the in-class discussions. Students really appreciated the instructor’s enthusiasm for the material. Some students found the weekly memos excessively time-consuming. One suggestion included assigning students to groups so that they can meet new people. Prospective students should know that there are weekly assignments and quizzes, but previously enrol ed students found it to be a beloved course.

The professor of this course was obviously committed to teaching in an effective way because she was always there when students needed her assistance. She would send out emails to make sure everyone was on the same page and give feedback. The class discussions were great, and the memos provided students with insight towards their stance on business topics and individual management styles. However, some students found the professor’s nature to be overbearing and micromanaging. Also, some topics didn’t seem to be directly related to management and often assignments would overlap. Students suggested that their lowest memo grade be dropped and less focus be put on memos and more on individual work. Prospective students should be comfortable with participating in class, and if not, this course is not for them.

The best aspect of the course was the engaging and accommodating professor who taught workplace- relevant skil s and practical concepts in an open and interactive environment. Students found the weekly memos to be repetitive and the course time period too long. Suggestions for improvement included having the course meet more than once a week for shorter time periods, creating the opportunity for students to change learning groups during the semester, and reducing the number of quizzes and memo assignments. Prospective students should be aware that participation is a large portion of the course grade and that there is a significant amount of reading and group work.
