Average Course Rating

(4.79)

This course is designed to introduce students in Computer Science to a structured process for thinking innovatively, for finding “problems worth solving.” Students will work through a set of tools, techniques, and templates in order to build a portfolio of problems to solve which can then be screened for impact and feasibility. Student teams form around the best ideas and design a solution. In the spring semester, students actually build the solution. Restricted to Juniors and Seniors majoring in Computer Science or by permission of instructor.

Students felt that the professor was one of the best aspects of this course, as she was very knowledgeable and taught the material using real-world examples. However, students felt that the course load was excessive, with many of the assignments feeling like busy work. Students suggested lightening the workload by assigning fewer, more meaningful assignments. Prospective students should be prepared to complete a lot of work, but know that most students found this to be a rewarding and interesting course.

Students praised this course for having an approachable and knowledgeable instructor who chal enged students to come up with and pitch startup ideas. Perceived issues with the course varied; some students thought that some of the lectures could be boring. Suggestions for improvement largely centered on a desire for more variety in the course; some students wanted the course to include a variety of speakers while another student wanted a greater variety of assignments. Prospective students should know that students found the course to be enjoyable and that it was important to have an interest in business, computer science or both.
