This course explores strategies for bootstrapped startups through larger organizations who seek to attract and engage consumers in the digital space. Through readings and guest speakers, along with a digital simulation featuring an actual venture, students will learn how to think strategically, select tactics, analyze data and optimize a budget.

Students praised this course for covering fun and relatable topics and for having a passionate instructor with an engaging teaching style. Perceived issues with the course varied; however, multiple students thought that the course’s lectures could be boring as they often revolved around bland slideshows. Suggestions to improve the course varied; multiple students wanted the course’s final project to be spread out over additional weeks so that students would have additional opportunities to receive feedback on their work. Prospective students should know that students found this to be an interesting course that chal enged students to develop and improve the social media strategy of a company.

The best aspects of this course included the semester long marketing project, the engaging instructor, and the relevance of the material covered. Students gave particular mention to the interactive style of the course, mentioning videos and visuals that were well incorporated into the lectures. Many students gave the workload the poorest rating, saying the amount of work due weekly seemed like too much at times with quizzes, readings, and regular writing assignments. Some suggestions for improvement included having a senior option, assigning fewer writing assignments, or getting rid of the final exam. Students interested in this course should know that the workload can be high but is manageable, the course is very useful, and you earn participation points by tweeting.

The best aspects of the course included the interesting and engaging lectures and topics discussed in class. Students felt that the course material was repetitive and grading was inconsistent. Students also felt that the final exam was unnecessary due to the time consuming final project. Suggestions for improvement included assigning a more interesting and helpful textbook and having only a final project at the end of the semester. Prospective students wil enjoy the course and should be aware that the course requires a significant amount of reading and writing.
