"his course is an introduction/continuation of basic laboratory experience in clinical/translational research in neonatal brain injury. Depending on their level within the program and the direction of the research project in which they are involved, the student will have the chance to perform/assist with: 1) Learn and perform introductory lab skills including appropriate safety as it applies to our lab. 2) Learn and perform the technique of neonatal hypoxia/ischemia methods in rodents. 3) Learn and perform methods of in vivo therapeutic hypothermia in the neonatal rodent. 4) Learn and perform functional testing measures in the neonatal and maturing rodent. 5) Participate in in vivo MRI imaging of the neonatal rodent. 6) Learn and perform basic MRI analysis of the images from the neonatal rodent. #5 and 6 Performed under the supervision of my co-mentor Dr. Jiangyang Zhang. 7) Learn basic protein and mRNA quantification skills. Performed under the supervision of my co-mentor Dr. Raul Chavez Valdez. 8) Data analysis and statistical testing. 9) Present scientific presentation of background work (if first lab experience) or data from our experiments at a local or national meeting (if more advanced or in 2nd semester or beyond of work. The student will be judged on attendance, effort, work ethic, and productivity at given tasks and successful completion of abstracts or grants if appropriate for the students level of training.
