This course is semester 2 of a two-semester course and will build upon basic pharmacology knowledge attained in the professional nurse’s education and experience. This advanced course focuses on the clinical use of medications for clinical conditions most seen in practice and across the lifespan. Principles of rational medication prescribing, which is based on evidenced-based guidelines, pharmacology and pathophysiologic considerations, lifespan considerations, cultural, genetic, and genomic, economic, ethical legal, and social influences will be presented. Prescription medications will be the focus of the course; however, commonly-used over-the-counter and complementary and alternative medications will be discussed. Completion of this course will enable students to identify pharmacologic treatments for commonly encountered clinical conditions and prescribe, manage, and evaluate medication therapy.
