The song has been an integral part of our society for centuries; work songs, lullabies, folk songs, historical ballads, protest songs, pop songs. Within the past century, songs moved from being caught-in-the-moment or lost forever to authored and co-authored works. Here at Peabody we are pleased to offer an opportunity to develop and hone the skill of writing your own popular song. Group classes are designed to foster discussion and collaboration through analyzing examples and collaborating on lyrics and song building. Course will lead to a final project in which students’ songs will be performed (not necessarily by the songwriter). In this class, students will gain tools and develop skills including: crafting and honing lyrics; building and altering a song structure; writing melodies; setting words to melody and setting a melody to words; exploring harmonic structure, and more. Attention will be given to the production of a song (i.e. arrangement, whether in live performance or in the recording booth). Course is a blended course of in-class and online study. Individual study continues through online prompts and both listening and writing assignments. Schedule for class will be determined by instructor after registration based on student availability.
