Welcome to the Songwriting Lab, a time and a place for exploring the parameters of songwriting through exercises, collaborative discussion & improvisation and weekly projects. The class will begin with a study of the elements involved in a cover song of each student’s choice (form, repetition, meter, harmony, perspective, etc) after which we will focus on different weekly topics, including: setting words to music; toplining; harmonizing a melody; modes; text writing exercises and more. Different levels of experience are welcome, see pre-requisite below. Pre-requisite: Songwriting 101 or submit the following to instructor Kristen Toedtman ktoedtm1@jhu.edu Links to 3 original songs-audio or video; studio recordings or performed live (quality of the recording is not a factor / phone videos are fine) Brief description of your songwriting experience; What instrument(s) do you play / use to write songs? Minimum of four students. (3 students, class will be 45 minutes meeting weekly; 2 students, classes will be 1 hour meeting every other week.)
